Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur review
This is unambiguously one of the best glow ups for a character in existence. While Lunella in the comics isn’t irredeemable, the show knew that making her have friends and family to back-and-fro with would provide excellent balance for her character. She stands out among Disney young girl protagonists in being genuinely intelligent, nerdy and possibly autistic as well as fundamentally warm and compassionate. Her neighbourhood is, as the song that begins and ends the show states, her family.
The show has excellent animation, Influences from Spiderverse can be seen, but it’s also unafraid to go off model for jokes as well as glow ups for the more serious moments. There is no lack of fluidity, and the character designs are perfect in terms of expression and individuality.
Though silly, this work isn’t afraid to tackle serious issues like racism, gentrification and transphobia. The team behind this show has genuine love in their heart, and their portrayal of city communities is welcome and heart warming.
A strong recommendation would be an understatement.
