floFlow review

--

Flow is about a cat dragged by a flood, who meets all manner of animals in a heavily implied post-apocalyptic world, including some odd creatures and fantastic landmarks. Directed by Gints Zilbalodis, it is a fully silent film, relying on the CGI animals to emote, which they do wonderfully (take that Disney’s Lion King “live action” films!). In some respects, it feels like an upgraded version of his 2019 film “Away”, which similarly has a voiceless protagonist in a desolate world, and like that film it has a lot of ambiguity particularly towards the end.

The CGI is fantastic, looking cel painted at times. There is a recurring motif of flowing water (even before the flood) which adds a profund layer of symbolism.

A very strong recommendation.
